This Staffordshire Wildlife Trust reserve is one of several good birding sites around the Trent/Tame confluence. Smew, Jack Snipe, Merlin and Short-eared Owl are all possible. Members who want a full day out can go on to nearby Whitemoor Haye and look for Grey Partridge, Tree Sparrow and Corn Bunting.
Approximate journey time from Solihull 50 minutes. Turn left off the A513 (Alrewas — Tamworth) between the National Memorial Arboretum roundabout and the bridge under the main Birmingham — Derby railway line.

Arrow Valley Country Park *. (SP065678 *) An extensive parkland in Redditch which has breeding Kingfisher, a small heronry and a range of waterfowl and passerines.
Approximate journey time from Solihull 20 minutes. Turn left off the A4023 Coventry Highway (Gorcott Hill — Redditch) into Battens Drive, then right into the main car park.

Pipers Hill Common * (SO960649 *) A Worcestershire Wildlife Trust woodland reserve, where Lesser Spotted Woodpecker has been found. Early Chiffchaff may be around, and if it has been a good Brambling winter it could be worth looking for them in the beechwood areas.
Approximate journey time from Solihull 35 minutes. Meet on the main car park, on the West side of the B4091 to Hanbury.

Instead of the usual tour of the Cliff Pool hides, an exploration of the woodlands south of the M42.
Approximate journey time from Solihull 25 minutes. Meet at the Club's Information Centre at Broomey Croft.

Pooley Fields and Alvecote Pools *.

This Warwickshire Wildlife Trust wetland reserve doesn't have the coverage by our members that it did 20 years ago, but there is still plenty to look for on the lakes and in the woodlands.
Approximate journey time from Solihull 35 minutes. Meet at Pooley Country Park, off the B5000 (Polesworth — Tamworth) to the north at the west end of Polesworth.

A new and still expanding wetland reserve, within the boundaries of the Blythe Valley Business Park.
