We're in the process of changing our links to mapping services. Instead of linking to one mapping site, Ordnance Survey Landranger Grid References (such as SJ870099 for our reserve at Belvide) will link to a site which provides onward links to many different mapping services, plus aerial photographs and other features, for that location. (It does require you to have Javascript enabled — which it is, by default, in most web browsers). Why not explore a little?
To that end, the site is designed to meet best practice HTML standards. All pages should validate , to the HTML 4.01 Strict specification.
All pages should work in any browser, in accordance with the "Any Browser " campaign.
We aim to ensure that our website also meets the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 , to at least AA and to AAA standard where possible. Please let us now if you find that we've failed to do so!
The site uses a "Cascading Style Sheet " (CSS) to control the colour of the background and text. The CSS is also standard-compliant .
There is no Javascript, and no "Flash" content.
(Javascript is used on the search results pages, which are provided, free, by a third party; and on links to third-party mapping sites).
This site does not use 'cookies'.

We use microsummaries to provide additional information in the bookmark titles of regularly updated pages such as What's New and our bird news pages, for users of compatible browsers (chiefly Firefox ).
Many pages on this site, including this one, use Dublin Core metadata .
Many of our pages, including this one, use "link headers ", which allow some browsers (e.g. Firefox with the cmSiteNavigation extension , or Opera ) to navigate to the next or previous page in a series, or to other special pages, such as our search or glossary sections. These headers are also used by search engines such as Google , to better index our site.
Our site has a 'siteinfo.xml' file, which provides an overview of the site structure, viewable in some bowsers.

We use geographical metadata, such as ICBM headers and "geo tags ", on pages specific to one site (e.g. our page about Blithfield Reservoir). The ‘Geo ’ microformat is used to mark up coordinates and other map references. See for example, our Belvide page.
The ‘hCard ’ microformat is used to mark up contact addresses for individuals, organisations or venues, so that they can be discovered by search engines, or downloaded directly into your computer's address-book programme, without you having to retype them. See for example, our contact page. You can also download contacts marked using hCard as ‘.vcf’ files .
The ‘hCalendar ’ microformat is used to mark up events, so that they can be discovered by search engines, or downloaded directly into your computer's calendar or diary programme, without you having to retype them. See, for example, our diary page. You can also download events marked using hCal as ‘.ics’ files .
The ‘hAtom ’ microformat is used to mark up regulalry-updated news, such as our What's New and bird news pages, so that they can be read in RSS readers.
The ‘hReview ’ microformat is used to mark up reviews, such as this one about Bramble Stout.
We use ‘OpenURL COinS ’ metadata on some of our citations, such as this 1947 article from British Birds. This allows some browsers (e.g. Firefox, with the OpenURL Referrer extension ) to offer links to searches for the article or book concerned, on academic library websites.
Our page footers, including the footer of this page, have links to social networking sites where you can bookmark our pages and share them with other people .
