West Midland Bird Club

Colin Bibby

We were sorry to learn of the death of Dr. Colin Bibby, a friend of the West Midland Bird Club, who spoke at our Bird Club Forum in February 2004.

Colin, who was born on 20 November 1948, learned that he had an incurable cancer in March 2004, and died in his sleep on 7 August that year.

Having been on the RSPB's* research staff since 1971, and from 1986, their Head of Conservation Science, he moved to BirdLife International* in 1991, where he led their research team and a major research programme, with projects in over 70 countries. In 2001, he became a self- employed environmental consultant. He was also a member of the Rare Breeding Birds Panel*.

In 1994, he was awarded the Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences* for his work with BirdLife International, and in June 2004 received the RSPB medal in recognition of his contribution to ornithology.

In addition to his great many friends, he leaves behind a wife, Ruth, and three children, to whom we offer our condolences.
