Ladywalk Reserve Ringing in 2008

For the scientfic names of these birds, and their local status, see our county lists.

Introduction

Ringing activity at Ladywalk has occurred since 1997. Bird ringing takes place at Ladywalk, 2–3 times a month, using mist nets.

During 2008 a total of 20 visits were made. Although this was more than in 2007 (when the marsh was devastated by floods) the total number of birds ringed (500 of 30 different species) was only slightly higher (425 of 25 species).

During the spring the site's nest boxes were regularly checked and pulli ringed. Two Tawny Owl nests were successful with a total of 4 young, along with 15 Great Tit nests (80 birds; average per nest 5.3) and 11 Blue Tit nests (73 birds; average 6.6). However, it was subsequently disappointing to retrap only 4 of the Blue Tit and 2 Great Tit young at the feeding station during the late summer/ autumn.

During the summer months activity focused on the marsh where 7 Reed Warbler and 2 Sedge Warbler ringed in previous years were retrapped. A colour ringed bird from Brandon Marsh was also controlled.

During the winter months the feeding station was regularly visited but, as can be seen from the attached totals, numbers were disappointing low. Long-tailed Tits though, including one ringed in nearby Lea Marston Wood, were very numerous (26 compared with 6 in 2007).

Continuous ringing of the site yields considerable information about the local bird population of which the age of individual birds is just one aspect. Over the years Ladywalk has had several 'elderly' individuals. This year saw an eight-year-old Reed Bunting, a seven-year-old Long-tailed Tit and five-year-old Bullfinch, Great Tit and Blue Tit.
