Ladywalk Reserve Sightings for 2003
Unless otherwise stated, reports on this page are anecdotal, and have not been verified by the relevant country recorder or rarities committee.

- Wildfowl counts from Ladywalk are made as part of the WWT's Wetland Bird Survey. The totals for 2003 are now available.

At the end of the year, the bird list for Ladywalk stood at 208 species, of which 138 were recorded in 2003. These figures inlcude two new birds, Honey Buzzard (in May) and Goshawk (October), subject to their acceptance by the county recorder.

Heavy rain, in the last week of June, flooded the whole reserve leaving the pools at winter levels with no mud or marginal edge. Unfortunately several nests of Little Grebe, Sand Martin, Kingfisher, Mute Swan, Little Ringed Plover and Redshank were lost. No lasting damage was done to the reserve and hopefully the water level will drop quickly with warm weather.

- 12th: Marsh Tit reported (possibly a Willow Tit mis-identfied?) Yellowhammer, 1 Oystercatcher, 1 Redshank, 2 Little Ringed Plover.
- 11th: 3 juvenile Jays.
- 10th: Family of four Whitethroat, Skylark on marsh, 2 Redshank, Cuckoo.
- 9th: 1 Oystercatcher, two broods of Gadwall with 10 and 6 young respectively.
- 8th: Green Sandpiper, 2 Redshank, 2 Little Ringed Plover, Hobby, 2 Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, 300 Swift.
- 7th: 3 Oystercatcher, Hobby, Skylark, Cuckoo, pair Teal.

Nest box ringing records for this year, to late June, include:
- Blue Tit: 16 nests ringed with a total of 109 birds. Largest clutch 9.
- Great Tit: 18 nests finged with a total of 99 birds. Largest clutch 7.
- 32 Reed Warbler.
- 32 Sedge Warbler.
- 1 Whitethroat.
- 2 Garden Warbler.
- 3 Blackcap.

- 7th: 2 Redshank, a Little Ringed Plover and a Snipe.

- 1st: Common Sandpiper, 2 Cuckoo, 200 Swift.
- This past week has seen the hatching of four broods of Canada Geese (7, 7, 4 and 2 chicks, respectively); one brood of 5 Mallard, 7 Moorhen and 2 Tawny Owlets.
- Warblers are in good numbers except Lesser Whitethroat, with just a single bird on 5th. Ringing records this week have included 13 Sedge Warbler, 6 Reed Warbler, 11 Willow Warbler, 1 Blackcap and 6 Chiffchaff. Garden Warbler and Common Whitethroat are abundant.
April

- 21st: Bittern (latest date ever recorded at Ladywalk), Tawny Owl, Peregrine, 90 Shoveler, 9 Goosander, 2 Grey Partridge (very scarce, nowadays), 1 Sand Martin, 5 Snipe, 2 Green Sandpiper, Redwing singing, Willow Tit singing.
- 19th: 1 Oystercatcher, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Redshank, 1 Green Sandpiper, 5 Curlew, , 3 Snipe, 4 Shelduck, 12 Goosander, Peregrine, Buzzard, Kingfisher, 3 Sand Martin, 4 Chiffchaff.
- 18th: 2 Common Sandpiper, 5 Curlew, 3 Snipe, 14 Goosander, 1 Water Rail.
- 17th: Pair of Peregrine Falcons mating on pylon next to car park, Red Legged Partridge, Tawny Owl, Goldeneye, 2 Green Sandpipers, 2 Redshank, 6 Snipe, 3 Water Rails, Treecreeper and Redpoll singing.
- 16th: 4 or 5 singing Chiffchaff, Woodcock on marsh, 3 Water Rail, 5 Buzzard, 8 Goosander, 60 Shoveler and a pair of Coal Tits.
- 15th: Woodcock on marsh.
- 13th: Ring Necked Parakeet (female), 150 Wigeon.
- 11th: 14 Goosander, 2 Shelduck, 2 Curlew, 30 Snipe, 30 Fieldfare, 25 Meadow Pipits, 2 Skylark and 2 Buzzards.
- 9th: 2 singing Chiffchaff, 13 Curlew, 1 Redshank, 3 Snipe.
- 7th: 1 Curlew, 1 Lapwing, 2 Water Rails, 40 Redwing and a pair of Grey Wagtails.

- 11th-17th: 10-20 Water Rails; Still 4 Bitterns showing well in icy conditions.
- 9th: Peregrine seen chasing a female Merlin, plus 18 Goosander.
- 8th: Woodcock, Mealy Redpoll, 3 Goldeneye and Green Sandpiper.
- 4th: Jack Snipe and 12 Common Snipe plus Tawny Owl.
late January - Early February
- Up to 4 Bitterns, but these are proving elusive at times.
- 10 + Water Rail.
- Flocks of 60 Redwing, 20 Siskin, 10 Redpoll, 30 Goldfinch, 30 Chaffinch, 25 Greenfinch, 15 Reed Bunting.
- 4 Bitterns across the reserve.
- Up to 10 Water Rail (seen from Sainsbury's, Riverwalk and 'B' hides).
- Jack Snipe &10-15 Common Snipe below Riverwalk Hide.
- Little Egret on 22nd January.
- Woodcock on 26th January.
- 7 Pintail on 21st January.
- 8 Goosander, 4 Shelduck, 100+ Wigeon.
- Green Sandpiper, Grey Wagtail &Kingfisher along river.
