Choosing one outstanding publication which should be awarded the coveted title of Birdwatch Book of the Year 2005 from a whole year's worth of new bird books was never going to be an easy task, and the shortlist for consideration included some very attractive candidates.

Local bird clubs sometimes have a hard time producing books that stand up to their commercially backed counterparts. Not so the West Midland Bird Club, whose excellent New Birds of the West Midlands is an exemplary avifauna, and testament to the hard work and commitment of a large team of dedicated amateur authors, researchers photographers and artists.
