An Egyptian Goose was present with the Canada Geese 1st-28th, then a dark bellied Brent Goose was present 6th-9th.
A fine drake Ferruginous Duck was present on the 9th, then again on the 12th-14th and 20th-25th, in between these dates the bird was visiting both Gailey and Chasewater. This was the second ever record for the reserve, the last was in 1978.
The long staying Black- necked Grebe finally departed on the 10th. A Woodcock and Merlin were seen on the 17th, a Ruff and Redshank on the 28th and finally 3 Pink-footed Geese on the 31st were a fitting end to the year.
2005 saw 170 species recorded on the reserve, another excellent total.
3 Hawfinch flew over on the 2nd. Strong south-westerly winds brought in a juvenile Arctic Skua 4th-6th and a Grey Phalarope 4th-13th. Another skywatch on the 5th produced 1 Hawfinch, 11 Crossbill, 146 Brambling, 3173 Wood Pigeon, and a Merlin all heading south west. 162 Great Crested Grebe on the 9th was a new site record. An immature Scaup 10th-11th, 4 Jack Snipe 13th and a Black- necked Grebe all month showed how rewarding November can be.
On the 27th October a 1st winter drake Ring-necked Duck was the first ever record for the reserve. Also a Siberian Chiffchaff and 2 Hawfinch the same day.
Also on 27th, a skywatch off the dam produced 75 Brambling, 17 Siskin, 11 Redpoll, 44 Greenfinch, 102 Chaffinch, 1221 Wood Pigeon all moving through to the south west.
Male Common Scoter 3rd, Long-eared Owl 4th, Curlew Sandpiper 4th-13th, Black-necked Grebe to 23rd at least, Egyptian Goose 9th-23rd, 2 Grey Plover 10th, 1 juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper 13th-18th when it was killed by an adult Peregrine, A Common Crane flew round the reservoir for 15 mins on the 15th, 42 Pintail 16th was a new reserve record, 1 Little Stint 17th-22nd, 1 Knot 19th-22nd, 1 Rock Pipit 18th-22nd, 1 Jack Snipe 20th, 1 1st winter Little Gull 21st-23rd at least, Finally 76 Brambling and 2800 Wood Pigeon flew over to the south west on the 23rd.
Black-necked Grebe all month, 1 Curlew Sandpiper 2nd, Little Egret 7th, 4 Mediterranean Gulls roosted on the 8th, 1 Whinchat 9th, 3 Knot and 4 Black Tern 10th, 1 Wood Sandpiper 13th, 2 Spotted Redshank 17th-18th, 1 Grey Plover 1 Knot 22nd, first-winter Caspian Gull 24th-27th, Long-eared Owl and Curlew Sandpiper on the 27th.
1 Wood Sandpiper and a Pied Flycatcher 3rd, Little Egret 7th, 3 Arctic Tern 11th, 2 Black-necked Grebe 14th, juvenile Marsh Harrier 16th, 13 Black Tern 18th, 2 Curlew Sandpiper 22nd-26th, 1 Knot 1 Sanderling 25th, 1 Little Stint 28th and 17 Black Tern 31st.
Adult Kittiwake 2nd, 18 Black-tailed Godwit 6th, 1 Knot 7th, Black-necked Grebe 20th, adult Mediterranean Gull 21st, Whimbrel, juvenile Mediterranean Gull and juvenile Garganey on the 30th. Juvenile Black-necked Grebe 31st.
Quail on the 1st, 38 Black-tailed Godwits 7th, 2 Sanderling 14th, Common Scoter 20th, and a Long-eared Owl on the 27th.
An apparent passage of Black Necked Grebe took place in April and May:
If all these birds were different, then an amazing 20+ birds have passed through since the 20th April, probably on their way to the Woolsten Eye population in Cheshire.
